Search for the right grow light distance for hydroponic herbs on a shelf and you get answers from 6 inches to 24. Most of them are copied from guides written about four-foot grow tents with 200 watt panels. On a countertop with a 24 watt LED bar, those numbers will starve your basil.
I ran my first shelf at 15 inches for two months because that is what the internet said. The basil grew tall, pale and almost tasteless. Moving the same light down to 7 inches changed the plant inside a fortnight.

The advice is not made up. Rather, it is answering a different question.

Light intensity falls off roughly with the square of distance. Double the gap and you get about a quarter of the light. So the correct hang height depends entirely on how much light the fixture puts out in the first place.
A 200 watt panel in a grow tent really does need a foot and a half of clearance, because any closer and it scorches leaves. A 20 to 30 watt LED bar over a countertop is a different instrument altogether. Hang that at 15 inches and the canopy receives a fraction of what it needs.

Notice that woody herbs sit closest. That surprises people, since oregano and thyme are slow growers and slow reads as delicate. Use this as the starting point, then adjust by what the plant does over the following week. Since every fixture differs, treat the table as a first guess rather than a setting.
🌱 How It Changes as the Plant Grows
Seedlings, meanwhile, sit at 10 to 12 inches. They have no root mass to support hard photosynthesis yet, and strong light at that stage bleaches the cotyledons before the plant can use it. If your light has a dimmer, run it at 50 to 75 percent.

🧐 Reading the Plant Instead of the Ruler
The table is a starting point, whereas the plant is the instrument.
Too much light shows up first on the newest leaves. They turn pale green, white or yellow, usually from the tips inward. Edges go dry and brittle, leaves cup or curl as if flinching, and growth stalls even though the reservoir is fine. Six inches is close. On a fixed shelf that gap disappears fast, so the setup needs to move with the plant.

🧱 When One Light Covers Crops That Want Different Heights
This is the real apartment problem, though. Thyme wants 4 to 6 inches and basil wants 6 to 8, but you have one bar.
Raise the jars rather than the light. Put the woody herbs on a riser so their canopy sits closer, and leave the leafy ones on the shelf. 🥐 Countertop Systems With Built-In Hoods
AeroGarden, iDOO and similar units have a hood that raises on a post. Those fixtures are low wattage and designed to sit close, so follow the manufacturer’s positions rather than adding a gap of your own.

⏱️ Light Hours and the Dark Period
Meanwhile, every herb and green on this list runs 14 hours on and 10 hours off. Not 16, not 18, and never 24.
The dark period is doing real work, though. Plants move nutrients, regulate hormones and convert the day’s sugars into aromatic oils overnight. Cut the night short and you lose the flavour, which is the whole reason to grow herbs rather than buy them.
Longer photoperiods also trigger bolting in cilantro and spinach, so pushing the hours costs you the crop rather than speeding it up.

💧 Beyond Distance: What Else Has to Be Right
Even so, perfect light height cannot rescue a reservoir that is wrong. I spent a month adjusting a fixture over basil that was actually locked out at pH 7.8.
pH belongs between 5.5 and 6.5 for almost everything, with 6.0 as the working target. Cilantro is the exception and wants 6.5 to 6.7, which is why it pales while the basil beside it thrives. Nutrient strength is per crop, not universal. Basil sits at EC 1.8 to 2.2, mint at 2.0 to 2.4, while thyme and oregano want only 1.2 to 1.6 and lettuce 1.0 to 1.4.
