Short on time

Quick answers

How many hours should a grow light be on?

14 hours on and 10 hours off, every day, on a timer. That covers every herb and green on this site except spinach, which runs 12 hours so it does not bolt. Setting the schedule.

How far above the plants should the light be?

6 to 8 inches above leafy herbs and greens, 4 to 6 inches for oregano and thyme, and 10 to 12 inches for seedlings until their true leaves appear. Light height by crop.

Do herbs need darkness at night?

Yes. Leaving the light on around the clock stunts most herbs and greens, because they need a rest period every night. Keep the 10 dark hours, and keep any air pump running while the light is off. Why the dark period matters.

How much does a grow light add to the electric bill?

Very little. A 24 watt panel running 14 hours a day costs less than two dollars a month in most cities. Go by the real draw in watts, not the equivalent figure printed on the box. Working out your own cost.

Can one light cover several plants?

Yes, if you plan the shelf. Put high-light basil in the middle and lettuce toward the edges, keep the light 6 to 8 inches above the tallest plants, and raise shorter jars rather than lowering the light. Planning a shared shelf.

Can One Grow Light Move Between Your Jars, Countertop Kit, and DWC Bucket?

Kratky mason jars and a DWC bucket sharing one LED grow light

Learning how to share one grow light across multiple systems keeps a kitchen counter from turning into a bright little airport runway. Four separate lamps, one for each Kratky mason jar plus a small Deep Water Culture (DWC) bucket, fill a power strip fast, and the extension cords end up in a tangle you have

Choosing LED Color Temperature and CRI for Herbs in a Small Kitchen

Split view of the same apartment kitchen counter, one side lit by a harsh purple grow light and the other by a natural white 4000K grow light over the same basil plants

A purple grow light works on basil, yet it can turn the whole kitchen purple, and sitting on the sofa without squinting becomes impossible. White LEDs solve that, although picking the right LED color temperature for herbs is harder than it looks. Two numbers matter: Kelvin, which is how warm or cool the light looks,

How to Combine Window Light and a Small Grow Light for Hydroponic Herbs

Four black-sleeved herb jars on a city windowsill with a clip-on grow light angled over them

Pairing window light and grow light is the smartest way to get steady herb harvests in an apartment. Windowsill basil often stops growing by November, and a cheap clip-on LED angled over the jars is usually all it takes to get new leaves coming again, with nothing else about the setup changed. You do not,

Summer Grow Light Heat Management For Small Apartments

LED grow light above herbs on an apartment shelf with a small cooling fan

Managing grow light heat in apartments becomes a real headache when summer weather arrives. A cramped kitchen with a few bright LEDs can make the air conditioning feel broken: the basil thrives, while the ambient temperature hovers around 78°F (26°C) and the living space turns uncomfortable. That is simply the physics of the equipment in

North-Facing Apartment Grow Light Strategy When You Get Zero Direct Sun

Full-spectrum LED panel illuminating hydroponic herbs on a kitchen shelf in a north-facing apartment

Figuring out grow lights for north facing apartment windows is usually the first challenge of a lease with the wrong view. Three jars of basil set right on the sill, in the hope that ambient brightness will do the job, can stretch three inches in a week, searching for a sun that never arrives. You
